What is Scalp Micropigmentation?

Scalp Micropigmentation (also known as SMP) is more than just a hair tattoo. It’s a popular non-surgical hair loss treatment during which natural pigments are applied within the dermal layer of the scalp, replicating a natural shaved head look, hence making it a great solution to hair loss.

Micropigmentation is a popular cosmetic procedure for men and women as it enhances the shape of eyebrows, lips, eyes and more. The same thought process is applied to the scalp as the smudge-free hair loss solution lasts for years to help restore confidence and self-esteem for those with alopecia or hair loss.

When it comes to hair loss, there are a range of options available for those seeking a solution. From hair transplants to advanced hair systems for men and women, the technology and care behind dealing with baldness is constantly progressing and improving.

Scalp micropigmentation is now a regular treatment for those who have lost their real hair or a full head of hair. What exactly is it? To make sure you’re up to date with this revolutionary treatment, Optima Hair explains the process of micro-pigmentation below.

The Basics of Scalp Micropigmentation

The best way to understand Scalp Micropigmentation is to see it as a form of scalp tattoo. During this non-surgical procedure, a natural pigment is applied to the epidermal layer of the scalp, effectively replicating the appearance of natural hair follicles. Practitioners aim to camouflage the surface area of the scalp where hair loss has already occurred and, in turn, creates a new hairline for the client.

If you’re familiar with the process of microblading of eyebrows, it is a very similar process. While microblading is done with a manual blade, scalp micropigmentation must be completed with an electric tattoo device. More power is required to penetrate the skin on the scalp, which is a lot thicker than the skin underneath your eyebrows.

Further benefits of the Procedure

As well as the obvious boost to a client’s confidence, SMP treatment also offers a way to cover any surgery scars from past procedures. For example, if a client has previously had a hair transplant procedure which brought with a few complications, SMP can be carried out in order to help camouflage any scars and imperfections.

Who is Scalp Micropigmentation for?

The procedure is great for those who have experienced any form of hair loss. His includes people with:

  • Alopecia areata
  • Thinning hair
  • Male and female pattern baldness

Does the process hurt?

Before the procedure takes place, your SMP practitioner applies a numbing agent to your scalp to alleviate pain. However, you may still feel some discomfort during the procedure. How much discomfort you feel will depend on your pain tolerance.

During your initial consultation, our experienced technicians will help you prep   for the procedure and will let you know what you need to prepare ahead of time.

After the final treatment, you may be asked to take certain precautions such as:

  • Not swimming
  • Avoid saunas and steam rooms for 28 days after the last procedure
  • Avoid heavy exercise for five days after the last treatment

You should also begin to moisturise the scalp after the fourth day of your last treatment (something you’ll be asked to do between treatments).

When would I see results?

Although the effects of hair pigmentation can be noticed immediately, for optimum results, around 2-3 sessions/treatments will be required with a practitioner after the initial consultation. Each session is carried out within a sterile, comfortable environment ensuring that the patient’s experience is a positive one, meaning clients are assured that their results will be of high quality.
